Chapter Ten
Friday, April 7, 1967
The first light of dawn made the fog worse. Steve feared he might stray off the trail, but he had to find the others. He continued on cautiously. It was terrible being separated from the rest of his team. He continued on through the jungle as first light made the foggy jungle surreal. He found he was approaching a rock formation, unusual in this part of the jungle. He began to hear the sound of water, like a small waterfall. Then he could make out the edge of a pond. There was a small rock where he could sit. He decided to wait there for the sunrise to clear the fog.
At last, the sun reached through the trees and the fog glowed a beautiful yellow. Then it began to thin. He realized there was a human shape sitting on the rocks across the small pond. Steve recognized the voice of his teammate. "Don't be frightened, Steve. We're all here."
Slowly the fog lifted and another of his team said, "We couldn't link up with you earlier. You weren't ready for us." Steve wondered why they would wait for him to be ready.
The third member of his team said, "You'll know we're all safe now. We've successfully completed our mission. We want to spend a little time with you now to put you at ease."
Steve, "How do I get over to that side of the pond? This stream seems too deep and wide to cross."
First teammate, "We'll help you with that later. Just visit with us now and know we're safe and happy that our mission is over."
Second teammate, "There are many great warriors here, Steve. We've learned a lot and they've honored us for what we did."
Steve, "I don't understand. We haven't returned from our mission yet."
Third teammate, "Not only have they honored us. They have let us see some errors we made from an awkward point of view."
First teammate, "It's good to always consider anotherâs point of view. You'll learn to understand it sooner or later anyway. Sooner is more pleasant."
Steve, "I don't understand. We won't be debriefed until we get back to our unit."
First teammate, "That's another reason we want to talk with you, to help you understand about the mission. Consider this a pre-debriefing."
Steve, "I don't understand."
First teammate, "Relax and stop being our team leader. Just accept that all we can do is talk across this water. Let us tell you what we've learned, then you can get on with the mission."
Steve was confused, "Yes, this fog is still pretty thick around us."
Second teammate, "We've arranged for one of the great warriors on this side to visit with you."
Steve accepted in his confusion he should just listen.
First teammate, "I speak for the others. It was an honor to serve with you, Steve. The warrior will visit with you now."
Second teammate, "It's not possible for us to remain here in his presence."
Third teammate, "Godspeed Steve! Our thoughts will always be with you."
Steve realized they were moving away as a great light approached.
